Cause and Effect
My mother has a small 8 lb. dog which she spoils as it is the only companion she has had for a long time. For example, the dog will stand on its hind legs, front paws on her chair, and beg while my mom eats - and she feeds the dog! I think it's a bad idea, but her house her rules.
We just moved my mom to this area, and she is staying at our house until her place is ready to move in. The dog stays in a pen or in my mom's lap while in the house. While we're eating the dog is in her pen. My house, my rules.
During our first meal the dog started barking because she wanted to be begging at the table. I told her once to be quiet, and when she continued I carried her upstairs, put her on my mom's bed (she's too old and small to jump off), and closed the door. She remained there until the meal was over.
The next day the same. One warning then off to the bedroom with the door closed. The third day one bark and one warning, and that was the last time she barked during a meal. She has been able to stay in her pen at mealtimes since.
I look at that as cause and effect. The effect was to be placed in the bedroom, the cause was the barking. She made the connection, learning that if she didn't bark, she didn't get "sent to her room".
I believe this means my mothers dog is smarter than a lot of voters.
